Child Born to Permanent Residents in Canada

Hi There,

Me and My wife are both Permanent residents of Canada, and we both are INDIAN citizens.

My wife is currently pregnant and expecting to deliver a baby in January 2021.


That being said, I have few concerns regarding this situation.


1 : Will my new born baby in Canada be a Canadian Citizen right away ? or only after either of us (the parents) become Canada citizens ?

2 : What is the process for them to get Passport ? is there any age restriction (say like they have to be 6 years or older) ?

3 : If the baby want to travel to India and stay for 8 months does the Baby need a Visa to India ? or since we are parents of the baby, the baby can simply travel with Canadian passport ?

4 : Is there any special VISA or Card for the baby to visit India multiple times for a lifetime ?

Can some one please through some light.

1. Any child born in Canada is a Canadian citizen.
2. No, you can apply right away.
3/4. You should look into registering the child as an Overseas Citizen of India and getting an OCI card, which would allow them to visit India. India does not allow dual citizenship so to become a full Indian citizen they would have to renounce their Canadian citizenship after turning 18.

Keep in mind if travelling on Canadian passport with the required e- visa if no OCI believe maximum stay is 180 days as a visitor .

you mean OCI card maximum stay is 180 days or, e-visa maximum stay is 180 days ?
