I am presently in India and my Canadian passport expires in March 2011.
I am planning to travel to Canada in Feb 2011 (1 month before) and renew the passport via the simplified renewal application process. Do you believe this would be a good idea or should I renew my Canadian passport in India itself?
Will I be allowed to travel to Canada as the passport expiry date is near and can any please comment on the time taken for the simplified renewal process?
If you're coming to Canada just to renew the passport, that's expensive. You can (as you know) renew it in India.
Yes, the new simplified procedure (available only in Canada) is easier, if you have a family member or other authorized person to "certify" that you are who you say you are. But in China (presumably in India too), the nearest embassy or consulate will now certify my application for me -- for a small price -- since I don't have a professional who has known me for two years to sign my application.
But if you come to Canada, I believe that Service Canada takes about a week, including mail time. That was the experience of my brother a few months ago.
I've renewed my passport while abroad. As long as you can get your application certified (in my location, lawyers, bank managers, and notaries also works) and don't expect to need your passport for the time period needed for application and return, there shouldn't be an issue.
