Yea, I'm just going to have to go in September and hope I can get some reasonable private insurance once I get there! Otherwise I'll have to set myself up on a payment plan and enjoy paying off my delivery for a long time, ha.

I think I should go ahead and tell immigration the truth as I cross the border. My MIL is willing to support me if my husband can't get a job right away... that would satisfy immigration, yea?

No advice on the border, but do check into the insurance before you arrive. I remember seeing something about if you dont apply within - I think 5 days of arrival you won't be covered - if they would have covered pg in the first place.

There's no such thing as private insurance that covers what OHIP does.

Thanks can usa 97! I definitely plan on doing the research beforehand. My MIL is going to get a few calls in to some private insurance places this week.

And yorkfactory, what do you mean? Why would the Canadian gov recommened that immigrants get private insurance for the first three months after landing if it didn't cover anything?

It's travel insurance, so it covers emergencies only. You're supposed to call before getting treatment (or have someone else call if you're unable to), and it doesn't cover routine doctor visits or pre-existing conditions.

I think this might be even more helpful than the ones I just posted.
I hope! I haven't really 'tested' them out but this one actually claims in clear writing to offer maternity insurance and I saw something referring to being in Canada at the time.

It's my bedtime now though, lol.

I hope you are able to find something reasonable.

so that you won't be claiming the pregnancy/labor/delivery?? I am guesing??

Wait, what's with this ten month waiting period before you can claim anything on the insurance?

But it's materity insurance! How does that make sense? I'm confused.

Sounds like this is an insurance more for a newborn than for a mom. A waiting period of 10 months is not going to do any good for your case since your baby will be covered by OHIP at birth.

I will address the border since no one else has so far.

I am not completely sure about the accuracy of this information but from all of the reading that I have done on this forum, it appears that the IO's are looking to make sure that you have a reason to go back to your country of origin if your visa is refused. So a pregnant woman who is relying on her MIL to take care of her when she doesnt have a Pr decision may be LESS likely to be admitted because there is very little likelihood that you would go home if your MIl is willing to support you and if you are refused what would make you leave Canada and go home to your country.

I think getting through is a crap-shoot!

So even going up with a decent savings and a husband that is perfectly capable of working would still make them doubt me? I'm perfectly able to go back home... I have parents here and a degree here, haha. Hopefully that would be enough?

Wow, that'd be insane if they had 10 month waiting period!?!?
I didn't look too far into the page , sorry if it's not worked out :(

This freaking blows. I hate how complicated this is! So basically I need to hope that I'm allowed into Canada this September and then, if I am, I need to pay for my OB visits and delivery out of pocket.

I don't know who I spoke to before at the Consulate, but you guys were right. My baby, if born in the States, would have to wait the 12 month waiting period for a certificate of citizenship before she could get OHIP... so If I have the baby here I'llbe paying out of pocket for health costs for an infant for an entire year. Wouldn't paying for a delivery be cheaper?

If you have no insurance either place. Then that is a weighty decision :(
