My Canada WP + TRV expired on July 5, 2012. My company had filed an extension and got a WP till July 5, 2013 today. Now I HAVE TO go to USA to attend my elder brother's wedding. Its in first week in USA and if I apply for Canada TRV + USA Visa then I am 100% sure it wont come in time.
So my question is.
With a valid WP and an expired TRV can I leave Canada for USA and return back to Canada.

You don't need to worry if you don't have a TRV. If you have a valid WP, the officials will let you come back, only if you coming back from US. For any other country, you must have a valid TRV. Enjoy the wedding.
Can you point to any official website/pdf document where it is mentioned (i will take a printout just in case visa official is unaware of ). Have you or any of your friends/relatives personally done this ?
"May I leave, then re-enter Canada?
In order to return to Canada, you must be in possession of a valid passport or travel document. You also need
to hold a valid study or work permit if you are returning to study or work in Canada.
If you are a citizen of a country that requires a temporary resident visa (TRV) to travel to Canada, you will
also need to be in possession of a valid entry visa to return, unless:
• you are returning to Canada following a visit only to the United States or St-Pierre and
Miquelon; and
• you return before the expiry of the period initially authorized for your entry or any
extension to it, either as a visitor, student or worker."

I have done this couple of times. I had valid TRV and WP, but i showed them my WP only to re-enter. I don't know any website where its written. Once my friend went to Buffalo Office for TRV, they kept his Passport and said come back next week(normally they return same day) so he came back without Passport by showing his WP.
I'm not sure about the process at airport. But by road you can come to Canada from any border, but please make sure before leaving if you are travelling through plane.
