I was wondering if people with OWP can do freelance jobs? I know that if you want to initiate or own a business in Canada you need to be either a citizen or PR, otherwise you can not own more than 50% of the business. What about freelancing? I am a software developer; can I accept freelance jobs? For example someone (a company or a person) wants a software, and asks me to create the software for them; they don't hire the developer, they just sign a contract or something. Can I do this? I really don't want to do anything illegal, but I can't find any information related to freelance/contract software developer jobs on CIC website or elsewhere.
Thanks, I need a reference though. I read that in other unofficial websites. I need a government of Canada source stating that freelancing is ok. Also, I need to know what should a freelancer with OWP do about income taxes and other legal matters. So, a government source is what I need.
If you want it straight from the horse's mouth, you could contact CIC (1-800-242-2100) for your first question and CRA (1-800-959-8281) for the second.
