Iam an International student who opted for a 1 year course in 2010 winter. After completing this Course I will be getting a 1 Yr Open Post Graduate Work permit Program. Can I extend this 1 yr PGWP to 3 years or Should i go for a 2yr Course to get 3 yr PGWP.
Please help me which would be safer if i apply PR, can some one also tell me the processing time for PR
If you take a 2 year course, you can apply for a 3 year work permit. If you take a 1 year course, you can only get a 1 year work permit. You can not extend a post-grad work permit but if your employer wants to keep you, he can apply for your LMO and a regular work permit. For an LMO, the employer would need to prove that he can not find any Canadians or PR's qualified or willing to take your job and that he is paying market wages.
If you take a 2 year course and then work for a year in a skilled profession, you qualify to apply for your PR under Canadian Experience class. I think the average processing time according to trackitt.com is around 5 months.
@Leon:
Some of my friends who did a One year master's in Canada got a 3 year open PG work permit. Now Mind you that they did not complete any other year of education in Canada prior to that. Just one year full time MBA. I also applied along with my friends and I got a one year permit as against 3 years. I really do not understand how they process and I would say its very inconsistent and no standardization whatsoever. Am saying this because I did not get a 3 year permit. Do you think I can write to the Work Permit office about it?
What do you think?
