British Royal Marine Commando wishing to immigrate to Canada with family

Hi all,

I am currently serving as a sergeant in the British Royal Marines. After years of talk and decision making we have decided that now is time to hopefully immigrate to Canada. We are looking to start the process of getting our PR Visa, and possibly looking at moving to British Columbia or Ontario. I specialise in communications and have Diplomas in management and my wife is a registered Dental Nurse and Practice Manager. We are also moving with our two year old daughter Alice.

Any advice on great places to live and work, areas with low crime and decent schools etc would be highly appreciated. Also any advice on the use of an attorney, real estate agent and any career/job/head hunting agencies.

1. First you have to determine if you qualify. You must have 1 years experience in the "list of 29 occupations" in the past 10 years. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#list
2. Note that neither dental nurse nor any communications or management occupations are open on the list. You may have to wait until the list is reset in July/12.
3. If you qualify,you must get a minimum of 67 points, there is a point calculator here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who.asp
4. If you don't qualify on the list, then you will either have to get an Approved Employment Opinion from an employer in Canada, which states you will be hired permanently once you are a PR. Or you will have to find a skilled job in Canada, and an approved Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC, that employer is, after advertising on the job bank, unable to find a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the position and you are the most suitable. Then you can apply for a work permit. After working in Canada for 2 years in a skilled position, you then can apply under the Canadian Experience Class, or you can apply under the Provincial Nomination Program in the province where you are working. the PNP programs usually require less than 2 years of skilled work to apply.
5. As there are about 50 ways to emigrate, you will have a lot of reading to do at www.cic.gc.ca

Interestingly, on my recent trip to the UK. The immigration officer said he would love to visit Canada and retire here as he loves the outdoors, a very different and refreshing mood from folks who are known to be a hard ass only

I always wondered how would an immigration officer apply for PR. Very Ironic
