Sometimes people admit things in the interview, or admit to things in the application that they don't realize will cause huge problems for them. One guy I know entered another country using a fake passport, and admitted it on the application. He was not charged with this in the other country - in fact, the gov't never discovered it was a fake passport. But he was there for 7 years, so how to account for this time in your personal history if you don't say where you actually were? And that requires a police certificate, which they can't get because he was on a fake passport.
That's pretty much our problem. We were honest to account for how we met. That's the only way we could have proven the length of time we knew each other and have photos to submit. My husband ended up getting the criminal clearance with the personal information he originally entered the country with. We wrote statutory declarations explaining everything. It only amounted to a mountain of problems.
What bothers me the most is that the last day I was in Accra, I ran into someone I knew abroad (in the same city I met my husband in). He was picking up his visa to go be with his Canadian partner. Although for much less time, he did what my husband did as well. However, so that he wouldn't have problems, the application was filed saying they met online. I'm still disgusted to know that they are in Canada together after getting the visa because of lies.
Sometimes, I wish we lied as well. However, I stand firm that honesty is the best policy.
I think it is best to be honest too - your friend was lucky that 1. he was accepted thru Accra with an online relationship, and 2. that the VO didn't find out they lied, because if the VO had found out, he would have been banned for 2 years for misrepresentation.
Reminds me of the day my husband got a phone call from an acquaintance of his now living in Toronto. The guy had gotten a TRV to Canada by giving $5,000 to the husband of somebody who works in the Canadian visa office in Accra. I can't help thinking that just paying a bribe would have been a lot easier and faster - and cheaper -than our process so far.
My husband was deported due to failed refugee, PPRA. We got denied due to his inadmissibility. we won the appeal & papers were back again for re-processing. I feel you.sometimes, we think too honest is not good. We declared everything same as yours but even my husband think immigration just based their decision on the papers. as long as everything looks good, you passed. if not, sorry but not think that this happened more than 10 years ago, everybody make mistakes. as long as that person is changed and not commited anything anymore & live a peaceful life cant be forgiven. I knew couples that papers where very good lots of recommendations from wife's clientele. but later, the guy left the woman & that's it. he's PR now and free.
Don't lose hope. you have a child, I do too and that's the reason they allowed my appeal..based on H&C.
What I'm worried now is he needs an ARC. ARC is a different application, I don't know if immigration is going to find any loophole on our application and deny it again. hope not....
