Sometimes they call references. You can use your US friends, afterall they would be able to answer questions about you compared to co-workers.
You could also ask your pastor, family doctor, lawyer, etc if they have known you for at least 2 yrs.
Can you use a family doctor as a reference. I think you should tell him first because usually he has a lot of patients and if they call him he maybe will not able to recognize your name.
Ofcourse you have to ask the person and it was clearly explained in my post.

People in Canada are aware of guarantor and references for first-time appliers of passports.
Just ask anyone you know to be reference, how hard is that.
Surely you know 2-3 people here to ask them to be a reference for passport ?
