My boyfriend is planning to come to Canada on a 6 months visit and then extend the visitors visa (he is American and doesn't require a visa) but we would like to be able to live together long enough to be common law or get married. I have a full time job but it would be nice if he could work part time. Is there anyway for him to apply for a work visa while he is here "visiting"?
Any advice would be helpful as we have NO IDEA where to start! and this whole process is a little overwhelming!
If he wants to work, he will first have to find an employer in Canada who is willing to offer him a full time job. If the occupation falls under NAFTA, he can then apply for a work permit. If the occupation does not fall under NAFTA, then the employer will also have to obtain an LMIA before your boyfriend can apply for a work permit.
If your boyfriend has just completed college/university - he can also look into the SWAP program which may allow him to come to Canada on a work permit for a year without finding an employer first.
