I'm not sure a longer quarantine is necessary. I'm really just worn out with this. I am hoping the vaccines really help with this pandemic and we can continue on with our lives with some sense of normalcy.
I don't think this means that a longer quarantine is necessary - but that this legal challenge to the hotel requirement is a trainwreck - and it's a trainwreck pushed by an ideological group for the headlines, not any real legal strategy.
Im hoping by summer this particular requirement will be lifted.

It's definitely doing what its intended to do, stopping unnecessary travel. I probably would have already had a trip scheduled if not be up there if it wasn't for the unaffordable hotel fees. Hopefully in the next couple months, with more vaccines going on, things will settle and they'll at least ease up on some of the restrictions if not lift the hotel or quarantine requirement

The hotel quarantine pretty much put the nail in the coffin for those of us in binational marriages where our partner cannot get an approved TRV. Our only option was already for us to travel out and most of us having 2 - 3 weeks vacation every year...it's impossible to add that 2 weeks of quarantine. I can't travel 11,000 kilometers to stay for 5 or 6 days so i can make it back to quarantine for 2 weeks. It's just so draining. If my husband could come here and stay with me for 6 months, even 3 months..whatever... I would happily pay his hotel quarantine... and even pay for him to stay the additional 2 weeks so he was still self isolating on his own before being reunited.

Its hard. Being American, its a lot easier for my wife and I to see each other, but for her to come down here, any time off of work she takes, you add the 2 weeks of quarantine off, so its at least a month off of work depending on how long she stays here. Then $2k for the hotel, its just not affordable for normal, lower middle class people to make it work.

I would pay whatever I would have to pay, if I could just get more time off than I get. The last time I saw my husband was a year ago, and I did end up getting stranded due to the airlines canceling my flight, upon announcement they just shut everything down... I did end up on a 2nd repatriation flight and paid through the nose. :/ But, if I could take 6 weeks off work, I'd be traveling...risky? maybe...but my marriage is worth it.
-"The only constitutional issue that I can perceive in this proceeding is whether the requirement to quarantine in a hotel is a restriction on peoples’ liberty without any real basis in science or public benefit."
Don't hold your breath, folks - this bit gets thoroughly demolished. Government provided a whole lot of information.
Why do we have some people who are exempt from quarantine (truck drivers for example) ? Are they immune ? Or perhaps the impact of virus coming from this type of people is insignificant ? Do we have some studies ?
Thanks.

The judgment or logic is not that some people are immune, but that some tasks and roles are essential to functioning of the country.
"Truck driver" here should be seen in the same light as farmers, or nurses, or doctors, or police, or ambulance drivers - Canada's society and economy is so tightly integrated with USA that they can't just 'stop' delivery of goods. There would be massive food shortages, medicine shortages, you name it. If you want to replace truck drivers with air crews or sea crews to get a sense, it's similar.
The regulations apart from listing specific professions and things like that, also give the government broad discretion to let in anyone they think is necessary.
And yes, they are making a judgment that such essential functions are more important than personal trips, even ones that seem essential to the individuals.
Are there studies? I'm sure there are, I haven't looked them up.
I hope the vaccines work!
Many are going stir crazy as the weather gets better along with risky behaviors. If the variants get out of control you will see
more restrictions, more risky behaviors, and this will all be dragged out longer. Unfortunately the government has come up with
this program far too late and we are all suffering the consequences.
Little strange Air Canada and few other carriers are still reporting many covid cases on their incoming international flights mostly
from one specific area. I thought they all had to be tested prior to the flight? The local quarantine hotels are sure keeping quiet.
If my family member was thinking/planning to arrive here soon I would be concerned.

An honest question or comment, wouldn't to a large degree this reflect the volume of flights to Vancouver from different countries? I mean, not a lot of direct flights from Rome to Vancouver.
(Allowing for the fact that some countries in the region have very low covid levels)
Right. If they're only allowing international flights to 5 airports, I bet those 5 airports are going to have much higher rates of covid from international flights lol

Yea, that's true but this is what we have to work with.
The airport authority has taken precautions for international arrivals as everyone gets funneled through
security and another test even if they have covid. Then off to the quarantine hotel and hopefully not getting infected.
I know where the ' hot-spots ' are and wouldn't want to be in that crowd now.
