I'm a Malaysian citizen who wants to marry my Canadian permanent resident (PR) boyfriend, who is a Honduran citizen, in Malaysia.
To get married here is relatively easy, but the Malaysian authorities need something called a "single status letter" from him to show that he's legally able to marry (which he is).
First question is, does he need to get his "single status letter" in Honduras or in Canada? Because there's no Malaysian embassy or consulate in Honduras, only in Mexico. But he's a Canadian PR, so I wonder about this.
Secondly, I read on this forums that there is no problem if someone wants to sponsor his/her spouse, but has no income.
I'm confused. Based on a particular link (that I cannot post, dang it!), it says that basic annual income is required? Please clarify.
Can't help yoou regarding the "single status letter"... I have no idea.
As for income requirements, spousal applications are exempt from the minimum income requirements. However, you must still submit the option C print-out and, if the sponsor has very low or no income, they may require information as to how the sponsor plans to support themselves and the applicant.
I can't put in the link here, but this is the end bit of the link: english/information/applications/guides/3900E10.asp (and in front you put the general CIC URL). I'm confused about it; perhaps you could clarify further?
I'm not sure why they have the chart listed under the category of spousal etc... Your question is asked often for this exact reason... it's not clearly stated. But, spouses do not have to meet the minimum requirements
It's called the Low Income CutOff (LICO) requirement so maybe that will help you find more information.
I can assure you that I applied and without meeting the LICO requirements as I'm living overseas and I was still approved as a sponsor.
If you look at the application guide for sponsoring a family member, it does say in there that spouses and dependent children are exempt from the income requirements.
As for the single status letter, he might have to get both from Honduras and Canada if he has lived in both countries after he came of age but if he only manages to get one of them, check with Malaysian authorities if that is enough.
Canadian embassies know what single status letters are and can generally write them for any sort of application purpose. Usually there is a small fee involved. If you are in Malaysia, I don't know if there would be a Honduran embassy, but try your luck at the Canadian one. if it is a requirement of the country, the embassy should be familiar with it. I know someone who got one at a Canadian embassy in Spain in the past.
Thanks for your reply. Yeah my boyfriend will write to the Malaysian consulate in Canada, as well as to the Malaysian embassy in Mexico (because there isn't a Malaysian embassy in Honduras. There isn't a Honduran embassy in Malaysia, either. The Malaysian embassy in Mexico covers Central American countries).
I just wonder if the Canadian single status letter is enough... since my boyfriend is Canadian PR. What do you think?
You can find the information on the document they need here: http://international.gc.ca/about-a_propos/authentication-authentification_documents.aspx?lang=eng#A4
