It is not required in some exceptional cases such as Religious and some people do not have or want to use that. Its your right. But you must show evidence that you havent used your surname anywhere and all of your documents must have one single name.

Its very difficult to predict how long it might take. SKmarch told me his file was forwarded after 57 days from CIO to visa office, however its been reduced to a month nowadays. visa office may take another 6-7 months to request medicals and passports. However its just a projection, the actual time may differ from Visa office.
