Hi to all this is my first posting, but i doubt it will be my last as already I have a thousand questions that need answering. We have just received all the paperwork from the Immigration company that we are using and I have a question about the background checks/declaration form. What background checks do they actually make, do they just check your criminal records are do they delve into everything like your credit rating etc. My hubby does have a conviction but it is over 18 years old and we have been advised that they take the view that it is 'spent'.

1. There a actually 3 background checks, criminality (depending on the conviction he may require rehabilitation) security done by CSIS to determine if he is considered a security threat and in some cases (mostly skilled worker applications) they will check with the employer and or schools. No credit checks.
2. You may wish to read the following on criminal rehabilitation, there is no such concept in Canadian law as "spent convictions" it is a UK term. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/rehabil.asp For Immigration purposes there is deemed rehabilitation.
