Hello everyone -

I've been browsing, getting a lot of great resources & advices in this forum! I appreciated for everyone who committed to help each other.

Me and my partner (Canadian Citizen) have been cohabiting more than 3 years, and we're just about to finishing up the common-law application.

I have a question about the OWP though.

--------------------------------
I'm a PGWP holder until May 2020. 1) Would it be safe to apply OWP when we submit the application?
(Since the processing time takes roughly a year, I wonder it's a safe to do that to keep the 'working' status.)

I'm also wondering, if I receive the OWP, 2) Can I keep my current job? CIC says,

"Remember that while your spouse or partner’s permanent residence application is being processed, they must:
  • maintain legal status as a visitor, student or worker in Canada, and
  • wait for their work permit application to be approved before starting to work."
The second part makes me confused.

If you have any experience or knowledge, please share your thoughts! I appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Thanks,

No point in applying for the OWP right now when you already have one valid for almost a year. If you haven't received PR by April 2020, apply then.

Thank you so much for your reply!

If I understand correctly, I would be an implied status if I apply OWP next year while I'm having a valid PGWP so that I can continue to work? :)

If I understand correctly, I would be an implied status once I applied OWP while I'm having a valid PGWP so that I can continue to work? :)

No, you wouldn't be on Implied Status. You would be on the same status you have now. You already have an OWP valid for almost a year. It would just be a waste of $255 to apply for the same status that you already have. As I said, if you haven't received PR closer to the expiry date of your PGWP, apply then.

I think my question has an error, but I understood what you're saying. :)
Hope for the best that I can land in less than a year haha!

Thanks a lot!

I think you meant after your PGWP expires in 2020 and when you apply for the OWP before the expiry and then once the PGWP expires and you haven’t received your OWP, its then when you go on implied status.
