Last Friday I checked with the call centre for IRCC regarding my updates in application. They informed that background check has started but application status doesn't show that. Is there any alternate place to get the real status of our application

No. Only way is to either call IRCC agents or order GCMS notes.

Does that mean any progress has been made ? I am in IP1 since 18th July 2018

Enjoy your time man, I have been in IP1 75 days. If It's below 6 months you are still good.
