you can apply open work permit to your wife at the time of you apply to work permit.

with respect to documents, the documents are same to work permit and open work permit.

I received my work permit over a month ago. I've been working for 3 weeks now but on Friday my employer HR asked for a copy of my SIN document. I'm not sure what that is. Is it something i need to get? or working with a work permit is enough?

You can get it from service canada office. Google your nearest service canada office.

SIN means social insurance number it is provided free of cost u can search local service canada office and apply
