Hi! all,

My question is with regards to medical surveillance. I have been put on medical surveillance by the Canadian immigration and am told to report health office upon Landing. My questions are as follows:

1) Because I'm studying in UK, I will only be visiting the country for 3 weeks maximum in December 2017. Bearing that in mind, would 3 weeks be enough to get an appointment for medical surveillance and to carry out all the required tests?

2) If 3 weeks aren't enough, could I leave Canada and do it when I come back in my third year permanently? Would it affect in future in any way that I have done it later in the 5 year period than in the beginning (during my first visit)?

1. 3 weeks isn't enough, but you still have to call when you land to report, and tell them you are only in Canada for 3 weeks. When you are about to leave, call them again and tell them you are leaving. You can also inform them that your approximate return date to stay permanently is in 3 years.
Once you're back in Canada, call them again, and they will mail you a letter with the surveillance instructions.
Don't know which province you intend to stay in, but be sure you've applied for your provincial health so costs can be covered. If you will be in Ontario, which has a 3-month residency requirement, you might not be able to do it the first time, but only when you return.

2. Yes, you can.
You just might be flagged at CBSA when you try to reenter Canada, but you can explain your situation--your medical surveillance can only be done once you have permanently settled in Canada, and the tests cannot be done outside of Canada.

The health office will depend on the region you are staying. You will have to look it up yourself.

Thank you for clearing the air on the issue. I intend to go to Nigara falls for the 3 weeks visit. So, even if I don't carry out my medical surveillance this year and when I come back for good in my third year, I can do that and still it will pose no problem later when I apply for citizenship or extension of my PR?

Also, have you come across such incidents before where certain someone had faced with the same situation and is currently a Canadian citizen?

They became PR with the medical surveillance condition last year. So you have to hope you get a CBSA officer who understands it as well. I think if you explain your situation honestly--you do intend to undergo the surveillance anyway, but can't do so until you're permanently settled in Canada--you will be fine.

Also, have you come across such incidents before where certain someone had faced with the same situation and is currently a Canadian citizen?

No, sorry. Besides, they probably cannot give you a straight answer, because this is handled by the regional health authority.

Given that you have probably been identified with a possible communicable disease I'm not sure if CBSA will love you potentially spreading disease around Niagara Falls for 3 weeks. Not sure of your exact situation so can only hypothesize. You may want to try and communicate with a medical surveillance clinic about whether you can land and go on vacation then return in 2-3 years. Given that these disease could get worse with time I would explore potential treatment with the NHS.

Have you done your soft landing successfully? Will they allow you to compete the medical surveillance after you move to canada permanently. I am also in the same boat. Please help.

Hi and yes, I have done the soft landing successfully and had the test done within those 3 weeks. Can I ask you how long you’re there for your first visit? If it’s the same time then whichever province you going, ring the city health service and book an appointment in advance. This will help you in doing the checks soon as you land and go back without any worry. Hope this helps

Thanks alot Nakul for your reply. I am planning to stay for 7days in Vancouver. So probably the time will be not enough to complete the medical surveillance. Can I postpone it for my second visit?
Or can I able to finish it within 7 days? And is it possible to get an appointment before I land in canada? Please advice.

Can you please reply and give your input.

For my father’s case we got email saying medical surveillance notice and what I am understanding after searching internet is people they get medical surveillance notice only after approval as a condition for permanent residency, but in our case we haven’t received any approval or decision email from cic, we haven’t even received any forms for surveillance or anything. Have you seen case like this, what do you think what that email means? Is it a positive or bad thing to get this email at this point in process?

My parents in Canada on supervisa, had permanent residency application in process with no decision yet.
