Yes I applied Feb 4 2025 with help of a consultant. No AOR yet. Current status is PGWP expiring in October 2026.

My lawyer is confident that my spousal sponsorship file will be processed in 2025 and doesn't think I will need to extend my PGWP, which expires in October 2026. However, I find this surprising because IRCC’s current processing time is listed as 28 months. Fingers crossed!

I personally agree with your lawyer but if for some reason your PR is still ongoing few months or weeks before your PGWP expires, you can always apply and extend it then, right?

My closed work permit is expiring this August and planning to apply for OWP once I got the AOR.

Yes in that case I can apply for Spousal open work permit before my PGWP expires. I am surprised that the consensus is that it will be finished within 2025 just because the processing time is 28 months on ircc website, and people are still waiting from may last year. May I ask what makes you confident the application will be completed within 2025? When did you apply?

Update: I got my AOR today, but it was actually issued on Feb 27 (Thursday last week). My consultant didn’t send it to me or notify me at the time, and I only received it today after I asked.

I’m a bit disappointed that I wasn’t informed right away, especially since I wanted to follow up on biometrics. The AOR mentions that if the biometrics fee hasn’t been paid, it needs to be paid first before receiving instructions. I don’t think I’ve paid yet, so I’ll be checking on that next

That’s the con of having it done by an agency, expect not to have an update on time. Total fee is $1290 including the biometric, excluding the agent fee.

Agent cost me $2,300, but to be honest, the application process seemed like a paperwork nightmare. I wouldn't have used an agent if my friend hadn’t recommended them, but at that price—especially with unlimited consulting in person and over WhatsApp—it was hard to pass up.

ChatGPT had mentioned that since my relationship with my partner is over eight years, we could qualify for common-law after living together for a year. However, it was reassuring to have confirmation from a consultant and their help in organizing everything. Without them, I feel like it would have taken me much longer to gather and organize the required documents, increasing the risk of my application being returned.

Compared to my study and post-graduate work permit applications, this was much more complicated—even with the restoration of status I had to submit when my study permit expired just before I could get my official transcript for my PGWP. This PR application required a lot more family, education, and travel history details, so having professional guidance really streamlined the process.

As for the delay, I called to check, and they said the AOR was sent later on Thursday, then Friday passed, followed by the weekend. When I asked on Monday, they sent it over. Thankfully, the biometrics fee was included in the application, so now it's just a matter of waiting for the biometrics instruction letter before I can submit them.

That is horrible, I am so sorry to hear that. But when dealing with IRCC, it seems quite normal. For my PR application, background check lasts for 2 years although the official timeframe is 6 months.
