Hi there! I have a question about my ability to work now that I have applied for my PGWP. I have been working with an immigration consultant but I do not think they are giving me accurate advice.
I recently graduated in December 2024 and received my letter of completion on January 19th, 2025. My original study permit was set to expire on November 30th, 2024, but I applied for a study permit extension in October 2024. The study permit extension application is still in progress, so I am under maintained status. My immigration consultant recommended I apply for my PGWP and begin working immediately, so I submitted the application the same day as my letter of completion. According to my consultant I am able to work full time immediately.
According to other sources and my international student consultant at school, I am NOT allowed to work because I did not have a valid study permit when I applied for my PGWP. I am very confused because my immigration consultant is saying that I am allowed, while everyone else is saying that I am not allowed. Is anyone on this forum able to tell me who is correct? I have a job offer that I am hoping to accept but I am doubting the legality of working right now.
Thanks!

You cannot work if study permit extension is in progress.

Thank you. That is my understanding as well. I keep trying to explain this to my immigration consultant but she continues to be dismissive and tells me that I am allowed to work... Any advice on how to proceed?

Today, my study permit extension was approved. I'm wondering if anyone has advice. I am leaning towards withdrawing my first PGWP application and resubmitting with the new study permit. Does anyone know if this will allow me to work, or if there are any risks to doing so?

I am currently facing the same issue, and i got your reply on one of my thread. Where you asked that if you can work while your extension is in progress. The answer is NO, i have contacted IRCC for the same bcoz im also in the same situation and IRCC said “ You cannot work even if you get your study permit extension” . So, the best thing is to withdraw the application and resubmit it for your PGWP, but reconfirm with a lawyer or someone who is authorized officially. And please let me know how much time it took for you to get your study permit extensiin approved.

That's what I did! I submitted a letter of explanation with a screenshot of the approval of the new study permit from the portal, the letter of approval from IRCC, and a picture of the old study permit. We reviewed this with a lawyer and they thought it was a good plan. But I cannot confirm that it will work. I withdrew my original application and submitted the new application yesterday so I will wait and see how it goes!
