work permit extension

Hi, My work permit has expired today. I had applied for the extension in February 2017 (4 months ago ) but haven't got it yet. I called CIC many times who asked me to wait. Can I go to the border to get the work permit extended ( even though I have submitted an online application)? If anyone could answer me , then that is very much appreciated. Thank you.

You are fine to continue to work because you've sent in a request for an extension before it expired. I would continue to wait it out until you hear back from them.
