Hi all,

My work permit is expiring next month, but I want to stay here as a visitor before going home. Where do I apply to change my status? I am from the UK so as far as I'm aware I only need an eta, do I just get an eta and stay here?

Hi

An eTA is merely authorization to board a commercial carrier to travel to Canada. It has nothing to do with status in Canada.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...on-change-conditions-extend-stay-visitor.html

I just checked processing times. It says 4 days for a visitor visa (within canada) and 45 days for a visitor extension. Which would I fall under?

Also once getting this approved, would I be able to visit the U.S and return to Canada again as a visitor?

Extension.

Visitor status ends when you leave Canada. You would be assessed as a new visitor by CBSA when trying to re-enter. You would likely have no issues but never a guarantee.

I see, could I not go to the States anyway (before my work permit expires) and upon returning enter as a visitor, without going through the hassle of applying to change to a visitor from within Canada?
