work permit and express entry

I am working in Canada with post graduate open work permit. My work permit expires in a few days. I have applied for a new work permit (this would be a closed work permit for my current employer ) in February 2017. It is being processed now. I am eligible to apply for Express Entry. can I apply for express entry now or should I wait till I obtain my new work permit?
