Due to unforeseen circumstances, my friend is forced to withdraw from university for a year because she did not make the cut-off grades required. Her study permit expire in January 2019 because of short expiry on her passport. Can she stay in Canada from now (August) until the expiry date in January 2019?
What's the best option for her to stay in Canada as she does not want/cannot go back to her home country because of finances? Also, any suggestions in the meanwhile since she cannot work these months?
P.S she's looking into college programs for January 2019 intake where she will get a new study permit if accepted.

Since your friend has already withdrawn, the school would most definitely have already reported your friend to IRCC and the study permit will be automatically cancelled by them. To stay in Canada, ensure your friend has legal visitor status, failing to do so will make the chances of getting another study permit slim due to having a record of being in Canada illegally.
If the reason your friend does not want to go back to his/her home country is due to finances and your friend cannot work in Canada, how does he/she plan to pay for residence, food, transportation, etc? You don't have to answer this, but if you plan on using that reason to "appeal" to stay in Canada, it's flimsy at best and IRCC will have the same question.
