I was recently arrested for DUI over 80 in Ontario, and am awaiting court date. I don't think I have much of a case, and plan to plead guilty. I've heard that one "may be deported" for a criminal offense while on work permit in Canada, but does anyone know how likely this is? Does anyone know someone who was/wasn't deported for a criminal offense? Thanks for the help.

I'm on Work Authorization from the US, and am not a Permanent Resident.

I am pretty sure you'll be deported, i am sure someone can give you a 100% answer though.

You wouldn't be able to "enter" Canada if you had a DUI on your record so i highly doubt they would allow you to stay if convicted.

Get a good lawyer ... and try to get the charge down from a DUI to a smaller charge like driving over the speed limit or something. It has been done before. You just need a really really good lawyer.

Close friend of Mine working in a food industry under temporary Foreign worker caught DUI and was given a penalty and was deported.. however I am not sure if this applies to all DUI offenders.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Your friend, what was the duration of their permit? I have a two-year Work Authorization. I spoke with an immigration lawyer today, who told me he thinks the issue will likely come up when I try to renew. I'm just trying to make sure I don't get deported immediately.

As far as fighting the charges goes, Canada has made it very difficult to do this in recent years from what I've read. Closed a lot of loopholes. Plus the charge is reduced somewhat (still criminal) if you plead guilty outright. I will be speaking with a criminal lawyer though.

I would really hate to leave this country so soon. Drive safe friends.
