Question?
If person just received COPR but decides not to activate it for a few months (due to travel committments & delay in receiving PR cards) - they also have a BOWP application in process - will CIC automatically cancel this once COPR is issued? If so -what status do they have while waiting to activate the COPR (original permit has expired) ?

I don't think so, but you should call IRCC and ask. And then let us know what they say.

Receiving the COPR does not confer any status - you have to LAND for it to give you PR status.
So, what is their status? If they applied for the BOWP before the original permit expired, they are on "implied status" until they receive the BOWP (or land as a PR). The problem with implied status is, it expires the second you leave Canada. So if this person intends to leave and return without "activating" their PR status, they must have received the BOWP before leaving, or, they will not be authorized to work on return.
