I use RBC's cross-border banking services and I've been very satisfied. Their currency conversion is free of up-front fees, but the exchange rate is always a little less than ideal.
I use RBC as well, even though I do not have a USD account with them, they do have that option, which seems easy and straight forward enough to use. I like that they do not charge fees for newcomers to Canada for the first 6 months - 1 year, and they have promotions for opening new chequing accounts as well (right now, the promotion is you get a free tablet if you open an account with them.)
You may not qualify for a credit card right away, but the best ones to start with are the ones with low interest rates and no annual fees. I have a visa with RBC that collects rewards points. I do not recommend American Express, as most Canadian retailers will not accept it for its high vendor fees.
Yup. They even have a registered bank in the USA so if you frequent the states or need to make ACH transfers you can. Check out http://rbcbank.com for more info.

I also use RBC which my hubby and I opened ...I am also able to use my CIBC Visa Debit from my home country, I have however not opened a CIBC account as yet as I was able to use my card anywhere. For checking & savings I have the RBC.

Scotia Bank has a program for newcomers called StartRight. I don't have any experience with it but it sounds good and might be worth checking out. Link below:
