What happens once your PR card expires in 5 years?

Soon I am going to become a PR of Canada under Common-Law Spouse sponsorship I am wonder what is the process after the 5 years when your PR ends?

No one seems to be talking about the process after you get your PR and I am confused on what the next steps in 5 years would be....

Do you just re-apply again under the same conditions?

Is there an easier way to apply and to extend?

Hey,

Only the card expires after 5 years and not your status as a PR. Assuming you keep your residency requirement you merely renew your PR card before it expires and there is not need to reapply/extend your PR status.

That's because most people use this forum to help them become a PR. After they get their PR, they ask questions like this in the Permanent Residency Obligations forum.

Hey,

Only the card expires after 5 years and not your status as a PR. Assuming you keep your residency requirement you merely renew your PR card before it expires and there is not need to reapply/extend your PR status.

If are all settled in Canada (got driver's license, health insurance, SIN, job, etc) and don't plan on leaving the country, I'd argue that it is not a big deal if you don't renew your PR card. It's kinda like a passport. Many people never bothered to get one because they don't travel (though a passport is more vital when traveling abroad than a PR card)

Hey thanks for this link and moreover to the original poster of the question, I was wondering myself what would happen after PR expires in 5 years. Now that u and even Kessio explained it is the card that expires, I undertsand. i wondered too how come there was no discussion on this forum about what happens after expiry, you explained it.
