Hi,
I need some clarifications for Claiming Asylum at Roxham Border (US-Canada Irregular Border).
My General Question is: What Happens at the Border? However, my exact questions are below
1) Do they take your passports at the border and do they retain your passports or give it back to you?
2) Do they ask you in-depth questions about your Asylum Claim or do they just need some basic information about the grounds for your Asylum case. My assumption is that they will ask basic questions and then we have to fill BOC within 14 Days, is that right?
3) We wish to move to Toronto, are we able to request this at the border? If yes, will they move us to Toronto immediately or do we have to stay couple of days in Quebec?
4) Will we be provided with shelter / housing and other support while our case is pending a review?
Any other general information on what happens at Roxham Border?

1) Yes, they take your passport and keep it.
2) Yes, basic information and then you submit the BOC later.
3) If you want to go to Toronto then you would simply go there yourselves. CBSA doesn't "move" you there and won't stop you from going to Toronto.
4) You'll need to sort that out once you arrive in Toronto. Toronto is pretty overwheled right now. So at least in the short term, you'd almost certainly be looking at a shelter. You would want to request a work permit at the border and hope one is issued quickly so that you can start working and arrage better accommodations for yourself.

Financial support is not really enough to live on especially in Toronto so you will need to plan on all adults working. Unless you know you will make a high income I would not suggest moving to Toronto. Cost of living is very high and so are rents and affordable properties are hard to find.
