Is it a new counterfoil in the passport? Is is a stamp? Is it a letter? I'd just like to know what one gets back when applying for a TRV extension?

The reason I ask is that I have a TRV and it expires at the same time as my foreign passport. I now have a new foreign passport (with an expiry date far into the future). I would ordinarily apply for an extension but I'm not sure that's possible since I need to start using the new passport soon (which does not contain the TRV).

Thanks!

Hi,

A TRV (Visa) is a counterfoil on your passport. It is a travel/entry document You can apply for a new one upon expiry of your TRV and this allows you to re-enter the country after you return from travelling (vacation etc.)

There is technically no "TRV extension" - what you will be extending is your stay as a temporary resident. If you came here on Visitor visas then when you extend your stay as a visitor, you will be likely sent a new Visitor Record - an official document from CIC, that is approx 8.5" x 11" and likely folded in half. If you will be extending your stay as a worker - a different set conditions need to be satisfied, but you will be issued a new WP with the new validity dates.

A Visitor Record and WP are status documents - not travel/entry documents. They show proof of your legal status in the country.

/hope this helps....
