waiting for common law with visa issues

Hi all! Would really appreciate some help here.
My kiwi girlfriend's iec visa expires june 17. We've been living together but not for the 12 months deemed necessary for common law. My question is- how do we live together long enough when she can't renew her iec? I'm aware of her renewing her visa as a " visitor" but it appears it's a 6 month max. Is there any way to extend a the 6 month visitor visa to accomodate us living together for 12 months? :'( :'(

She simply needs to apply to change her status to visitor, citing that she is seeking to establish Common-Law status. If she is only allowed 6 months, she just applies to renew it before it expires.
