Visitor with a spousal open work application

Can a first time visitor in canada whose application for a spousal open work permit still processing stay over 6months? Please I need clarification on this. My husband is on a study permit and i came with a visitor visa, but I applied for an open work permit from inside canada and the application is still processing. I will be six months old in canada next month February. please I need clarification on my next step. Thank you
