I am an international student and my study permit expires on march 2021. My wife and my son don't have a visitor visa because their application was refused in September. Now I want to add their visitor visa application to my study permit extension application. The standard procedure for their visitor visa has many documents, on the other hand, If I add theirs to mine, I just need to fill imm5257e and marriage documents. I am really confused and afraid of getting refused again.
Should I opt for applying individually or together?

You can try applying if you want, they may or may not approve it in time.
What application was refused before? Was it SOWP for your spouse?
Did they mention the refusal reasons? Did you get GCMS notes for the refusals?
They may just refuse it again, once you get your WP, I believe you will have a better chance.
Previous application was for visitor visa.
the reasons were that financial, family connection and 2 more which I couldn’t remember.
Actually I m not familiar with the GCMS notes. I should learn.
I see your point and you are right. And I need to make a decision.

after this conversation, we applied again for a visitor visa. Guess what, we re still waiting for an answer since February 2021.
I applied to get an exemption to reunite with my family, i couldn't get an answer from ircc to my application.
Last month I started to work again, and my PGWP was approved. 2 weeks ago we sent new job docs and new WP to the immigration office with a new letter explaining the final situation that we are in. Still no answer.
I heard about applying for a work permit for my spouse directly instead of a visitor visa. The problem is I have no idea about the process and there is an application that has been progressing (waiting) since February.
