Visitor Visa extension while Sowp inprogress inside Canada

My wife is on Visitor visa and traveled along with me to Canada. I have applied sowp on May 10th but no updates till now. I know it will take time. Meanwhile can I apply for Visitor visa extension as well for a safer side if in case her sowp refused then she has to leave and also at that time her visitor visa also will be expired. Please advice.

SOWP is taking 5-6 months
You can wait till close to expiry and then decide

I have a similar situation, I have applied for SOWP from outside canada on May 30th, should I apply for visitor visa as well since it is taking too long for the SOWP decision? Please advise.
