Hi,

Is there advantage in extending my visitor visa (which expires in 2 months) yet our sponsorship application has already been received? In the same pack, I sent application to change conditions from visitor to worker (OWP)

I would, if sponsor ship approval cano take several months. I have a friend who applied in March who is still waiting for approval.

No. As you submitted the OWP app, you will have Implied Status after your visitor visa expires, allowing you to legally remain in Canada.

Legally, you don't need to extend it since you will be on implied status once visa expires. But, it is a good idea to extend it IMO.

I had thought implied status began once sponsorship had been approved, sorry guess I was wrong.

Provided a person submits a new application while they still have legal status in Canada, Implied Status starts when the current status expires.

For the OP, s/he has legal visitor status and has sent the OWP app. Once the visitor status expires in 2 months, the OP will have Implied Status while the OWP app is being processed, allowing him/her to legally remain in Canada

The OWP is granted after sponsor approval.

Thank you all for the responses.

I have been advised by a former CIC employee to extend the visa (in order to remain in status).
Unless they give me a multiple-entry visitor visa (that allows me to travel abroad) I honestly don't see what use there is in extending the visitor visa.

You don't need to extend it if you submitted OWP. CIC employees (present or former) are notorious for giving bad info.

As proof of implied status if anyone asks, keep a photocopy of your OWP application, your fee receipt for the PR app, and AOR when you get it sometime during stage 1 of the process.

Keep in mind that implied status ends as soon as you leave the country, so you should stay in Canada during entire inland processing time.
