visitor permit expiring and student permit not approved yet

Hi, this is driving me insane, not sure what to do.

I am currently in Canada, I applied for a study permit about a month ago. It has not been approved yet and my visitor permit is expiring in a week.

Some questions

1. What are my choices? Do I need to return to my country when visitor permit expires?
2. Will it help if I also file to extend my visitor permit? Will there be a conflict if both student permit and visitor permit are approved?
3. If my student permit is not approved, then at what stage can I re apply for a student permit?

This is for Quebec, and my CAQ took a month to arrive, and my course has started already. Don't know what to do.
