Visa taking 6 months now for background check

I have applied for a visitor Visa for my parents since 10 Feb 2019 since they are having their grandchild here in Canada.
It has been 6 months and until now they are under a background check, I have tried emailing and calling the embassy and cic but it seems everybody is saying it is not us or the application is under background check and we cannot estimate the time.

Is there anything I can do to see some progress?
