Hello,
Please advise or share a link to a thread. I tried searching forums. However, I couldn't find any scenario similar to ours.
I am a Canadian citizen, my wife is a PR. We have a 9 months old son.
We would like to invite my wife's parents to visit us in Canada, to meet their grandson and to see their daughter. They haven't seen my wife for over 4 years.
They live in Moldova.
What visa should we apply for? Grandparent Super Visa or Visitor Visa?
We want them to come separately.
First mother-in-law for six months. After she returns, father-in-law for 6 months.
The ties they have are their two other daughters and three grandchildren (also live in Moldova), house, and one of them since they won't be here together. They are both retired.
Do we apply once for both or separately?
If you would like them to visit separately just so to create a family tie then I suggest you rethink about applying for their TRVs.
If you meet the eligibility criteria for super visas, I would recommend you consider that option instead of applying for TRVs. And, both your in-laws can apply together and visit together because they won't have to prove too many strong ties for super visas.
That said, they would state a visit of more than 1 year if they apply for super visas. We have seen cases where the parents were issued TRVs instead of super visas because they had mentioned a visit of 6 months or less
Thank you for your reply Bryanna!
They have never traveled to visa-required countries.
No investments or other income, only pension.
The reason for coming separately is so it is easier for us financially and also so they can be with our son for a year in total when my wife returns to work. After that our son will be over two years old and it will be more affordable for us to put him in daycare.
Those are the reasons for coming separately. Although, I did think it would help in proving that they are not planning on staying in Canada.
I wanted to mention in the invitation letter that one of them needs to stay in Moldova to help looking after their other 14 months old grandson, but that might suggest that they are coming here to babysit as well (which is partially true, it is one of the reasons). I heard that is not a good idea to mention about parents coming to babysit in Canada.

It's not advisable to state this as the purpose of their visit.

Hi Bryanna,
I meet LICO without my wife.
It is just the initial big hit with visa, tickets, insurance costs. We just bought a house and have a little one.
If I understood everything correctly, my only option is to invite them together for a year. Also after looking at Document Checklist, one of the forms is an application for TRV IMM5257. Is the invitation letter the place to indicate that we are applying for super visa?

One option to apply online. I go to Apply on paper and click on the guide IMM5256.
There is Document Checklist IMM5484 in that guide that has this form IMM5257 which is an application for TRV with only two options Visitor and Transit.

I use the Come to Canada tool, choose temp stay more than 6 months and I get this:
Visitor Visa over 6 months.
At the end it gave a list of required documents and Application for Visitor Visa (TRV) was there - IMM5257.
there is only two choices there for Visa requested. technically 3:
Blank (just a blank line)
Visitor Visa
Transit
Can you please send me the IMM number for super visa application? I can't find it anywhere. Anywhere I go it takes me to IMM5257.
Has something changed and there is no super visa application and 5257 is used instead?
Does this have anything to do with it (this is from Instruction Guide [IMM 5256] for applying for supervisa): About the super visa
On November 4, 2011, we announced a temporary pause on all new sponsorship applications for the parents and grandparents category. With the introduction of this pause, we implemented a long-term Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for applicants seeking to visit their child or grandchild who is either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
IMM 5257 is a common form for TRV as well as super visa.
You will need to select the 'Super visa for Parents/Grandparents' option in Question 1 of the 'Details of visit to Canada' of the application form/IMM 5257
