Do we have to import the car the same day we permanently move to Canada? Do we get any window or buffer within which we can import the car?
I was planning to move to Canada over the weekend. Since the US border patrol offices who do the export formalities won't be open on weekends, how do I export-import my car the same day?

I'm assuming you already landed and are currently a PR of Canada. Hopefully you did declare your car in the good to follow list when you first landed. If these statements are true, yes you can import the car at a later date. However, keep in mind that whenever you go to the US customs office for export formalities, you will have to drive to Canada. You will not be allowed to exit to the US side. Also, there is a 72 hr period when the vehicle must be in the US prior to importing. So if you already have the car in Canada, you will have to drive back to the US and stay there for 3 days before trying to import it.

Also, is it mandatory to export the vehicle to Canada? Since I am planning to move back to US in few years. Will I face any issue driving a US plated vehicle in and around Canada?

I would highly recommend you export the vehicle. You need insurance, which may be a mega pain or not possible to get from the US with a Canadian address and drivers license . While I don't wish it on anyone, it is best to be prepared for in case you are involved in an accident and actually have to file for a claim, things will indeed get very very messy. I know it might be a pain going to go through the export formalities, but well worth it for peace of mind. And as a matter of principle - do the right thing!
