Trying to make some big decisions this weekend but have questions on visitor ext

So my visitor status ends 2/21 here and I need an extension. We are currently debating on whether I apply online, go to the border or go to USA for visit.

my questions:

1. Do you need to activate a visitor extension at a border crossing?

2. If I leave Canada while extension is being processed does it void the application?

3. Would there be a visitor extension fee at the border if I flagpoled or would I just get another 6 months?

1. No.

2. No - but if you're not allowed back into Canada, that will void your application.

3. No fee. But you won't necessarily get another six months. The officer may allow you in until the end of your original visit (i.e. 2/21), they may stamp your passport and allow you in for another six months, they may stamp your passport and let you in with a written in date that is less than six months, or they could refuse entry.
