I will be applying for a TRV to come to Canada to study English for less than 6 months. But if I like it and want to stay longer, can I apply to extend beyond 6 months?

You can certainly apply to extend your visit (no guarantee it will be approved). However you can't keep studying since a visitor visa only allows you to complete a program that is six months or less. If you want to study for more than six months, you will need a study permit.
