Travelling abroad ,multiple entry visa and work permit

Hi

I need to travel to india in the first week of jan. My student visa and off campus work permit expires in mid november. I have already applied for the post grad work permit in october 2010 but i dont know how long it will take.

is it true that i can only apply for my multiple entry visa after i get my work permit or can i send my in my application for the multiple entry visa now itself. If i wait for my PDWP i dont think ill be able to get my multiple entry visa in time for me to go.


Please help...
