I am a Canadian citizen sponsoring my husband for permanent residence. I have just spent a fortune in certified translations in Toronto by an ATIO certified translator of Spanish documents into English. On the Document Checklist IMM 5443 it states : "You must provide certified translations in either English or French for all documents (e.g. police, birth certificates, etc.) that are not already in English or French". then further down it states:"PHOTOCOPIES (OR ORIGINALS WHEN INDICATED) OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS
(Photocopies do not need to be certified. Do not send original documents unless specified as they will not be returned) BUT in the Guide 5527 it states "Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
the English or French translation; and
an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
a certified copy of the original document.
I do not understand this. IMM5443 states that they do not need to be certified. But the Guide 5527 says that they do.
Is getting a certified translation enough? It seems quite biased of them to state that by virtue of the fact that a document is in English or French (be it from Haiti or France) it only requires a photocopy, yet if it a document from Spain, the original copy must be authenticated by a notary public as well as certified translated?
