My situation is somewhat complex but I haven't been able to find any help elsewheres so I was wondering if anyone here might be able to answer this question:

I'm a US citizen and passport holder, and Ive been studying in Canada since September, 2011. My initial study permit is valid through the end of June, 2012, but I am about to apply for an extension til December 2012 which will allow me to fully complete my course of studies...

However, my passport expires at the end of January, 2013 - I understand that is not a problem for my study permit extension; however, shortly after I finish my coursework in December 2012 and move back to the US, I am going to be taking a trip overseas to some countries that require a passport to be valid for 6 months after the visit to those countries - obviously, my passport does not fit that 6 month window, so therefore I need to get a new US passport over the summer/fall.

My hope is that I will be able to extend my study permit on my existing passport, and then once that is approved, get a new US passport and somehow be able to transfer my study permit to that new passport (since the actual study permit that CBSA stapled into my passport identifies my passport by number, and my passport was stamped on my initial entry into Canada) - is it possible to transfer the study permit from my existing passport to my new passport, once I get the new passport, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

1. Your valid but expired passport can still be used since the passport expiry has no effect on the permit's validity. You must then travel with both the new + expired passport
