Hi!
To all those who have successfully landed in Winnipeg, can you give us an overview of how you settled? Was it easy finding a job? How about the cost of living?
We just submitted our MPNP application and based on what I have read in this forum, it will take at least 18 mos. for the whole process. We're a family of 4, our kids are 6 and 2 yrs old so I'm just asking for any tips so we'll come prepared to start a new life in Winnipeg. Thanks for your helpful advice!
Winnipeg is mostly a blue collar city. Cost of living is relatively low compared to elsewhere, but real estate values have been rising. There is a bit of a bubble. Living in a rural area just outside the perimeter and commuting to the city is a reasonable option for many. One thing you should be aware of is there is a Francophone community in Manitoba, which affects the job market in that many social service, public service jobs require some knowledge of French. There is also a sizeable German speaking community in parts of the province. Oh, also, Winnipeg is the coldest city with more than 600,000 people in the entire world.
Thanks for the reply links18! I have another question please if you don't mind. In terms of monetary figures how much do you think is the average monthly expenses for a family of 4? Can you give a breakdown for rent, transportation, groceries, etc. Is CAD 3000 enough?
Hmm, I am not entirely qualified to answer that one with authority. It all depends on how you want to live. Figure rent is going to be about $1000 a month.
