Hey Guys
So I moved to Canada from the US on the 21st of August, 2018. My Canadian payroll started on the 28th of August 2018 to present.
I just filed my US tax returns for the period 1st January 2018 to 27th August 2018. And I do get a federal and state refund.
My question is, while filing taxes in Canada, do I have to show the US tax return as well? Or can I just file taxes in Canada for the period I have stayed here?
Could you please help?
Hi can someone help if possible. Thank you.
Your Canadian tax started on the date you moved to Canada.

Thank you. So I dont really have to show my US return right?
NO. However, if you are American or green card holder, you might have to show your Canadian income on your US tax return.

Hi Wickerman,
Can you please advise me?
I moved to Canada from the US in July, 2021. I was on H1B visa in the US. I was on US payroll prior to moving to Canada and switched to Canadian payroll after the move. Do I need to file US tax return as resident alien for 2021 or Dual status alien? BTW I meet the substantial presence test for 2021. Also do I report my Canadian income on US tax filing for 2021. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!
