Dear all,

I'm a Swedish student going to University of Waterloo for a PhD. I just submitted my study permit application online but I don't understand if I need a visa or not? Swedes don't need a visa for temporary visits/tourist purposes but do I need one if I'm supposed to be a student?

Cheers and thanks!

Yes, because only "visitors" are visa-exempt.

1. Actually No. The OP is a Swedish citizen, s/he only requires a study permit not a TRV as well, as Swedes are Visitor Visa exempt.

Well, now I'm confused! (TRV is temporary resident visa, right?). From what I've been able to read it sort of seems I don't need a visa like PPM says, but then again it says 'visitor' and I'm a student. Zardoz, are you from the UK? They should be visa exempt as well, right? What did you have to do?

I am German and hence visa-exempt as well. Have attended several years of elementary and high school in Canada. I only had study permits. Never needed a TRV.

I stand corrected... I was under the impression that any exemption would be limited to a maximum of 6 months, which would be insufficient for supporting a study period.

Follow up question! Is there still a chance they'll ask me to submit my actual passport even if I don't need a visa?
