Study Permit Extension

Hi,
My study permit is going to expire on 6th January 2021, and I am going to apply for my extension in few days. One of the hindrances to this process is that my passport is expiring on 6th January as I am waiting for my renewed passport.
Given that the study permit processing time is about 50 days and there is a chance that I might not get my renewed permit before 6th of January. My question is can I stay in Canada while I am waiting for my extension with my current study permit expired which is beyond 6th January?
