Hi everyone,

I came to Canada in 2023 on a two-year master’s program and applied for study permits for my three children, which were approved until the same date as my study permit—April 30, 2025. I have already applied for my PGWP but haven’t yet applied for my children’s study permit extensions.

I have a few questions regarding their study permit extensions:

1. Do I need a job to apply for my children’s study permit extensions?
• I currently do not have a full-time job, but I have a part-time Tier 4 job as a clerk.
• Is any job required to apply for their extensions, or can I apply without one?
• If a job is required, does it need to be Tier 0 or 1 (as an RCIC consultant told me), or would a lower-tier job be acceptable?

2. Financial Support
• My spouse has a business back home and can financially sponsor our family’s expenses.
• Do I need to submit financial proof (such as my spouse’s sponsorship or my own income) when applying for my children’s study permit extensions?

3. Alternative Options if Study Permit Extension is Not Approved
• If my children do not qualify for study permit extensions, can I apply for visitor records instead?
• If they are on visitor status, can they continue studying in Canada while I am here?

I appreciate any guidance or references to official sources that can clarify these requirements. Thanks in advance!

How old are your children?

You need a higher tiered job. The grounds for your family to remain in Canada is your employment not the financial support of a spouse abroad. Once your children are no longer on a study permit they are no longer entitled to attend public schooling and public schooling for free. They should be preparing to return to live with their other parent.

Thankyou so much for the clarification
