study permit and spouse work permit applications

wondering about procedures for application. Does one apply online for the study and work permits at the same time or is it better to apply at the local visa office or are the applications made separately? Accompanying spouse has a job offer - downside of piggybacking on wife's study permit is the work permit is limited by her permit although no LMO required. I suppose I can amend work permit while in Canada after I start working if I want to stay but what are the consequences to me of doing so?
